Our story

Our story

After several years of running our individual swim schools in Poole and Southampton, hiring pools to facilitate our lessons, it was clear that we were each facing the same barriers, sometimes prohibiting our swimmers from having the optimum lesson experience. We would always discuss our vision of what would make the ideal environment for swimming lessons for children and parents alike, and after years of hard work, Bluefins was born!

Why it matters

It is vital to both of us, that children’s swimming lessons are accessible to all, that the weekly visit to your swim school is not the ‘dreaded club,’ where changing rooms are below par, bringing siblings along is inconvenient, or you melt into a puddle on poolside, not to mention having no coffee to get you through!

Imagine a space where teacher consistency is key, good quality lessons are accessible, you are met with a warm welcome and your child is not just a number. Imagine having a facility where you can finally pick up those lessons as an adult to overcome your fear or tweak that technique, or a venue where home educated children are cherished during school hours and SEN provision is as important as mainstream.

Co-founder & director

Hi, I'm Anna, co-founder and director at Bluefins. I have been teaching for 15 years, where I have taught babies from 8 weeks old through to adults in their 80's. I love seeing swimmers achieve something they didn't believe was possible, and watching them learn new skills and feel so confident in themselves! When I am not busy at Bluefins, tutoring swim teachers or taking lessons, you will find me with my husband, our two children and our crazy boxer dog, either out on the paddle boards, in the garden and searching for new activities!

Passionate swim teacher

Hi, I’m Melissa. I’m a mum of two and a primary school teacher turned swim instructor. I love helping children grow in confidence and enjoy every splash. When I’m not in the pool, you’ll find me exploring the New Forest, at the beach, or reading with a coffee in hand.

Passionate swim teacher

Hello! I am Nathan. I did swimming with all my family leading up to teaching swimming, it first started with my brothers then my cousin then me! Spare time is now mostly looking after the baby or watching shows and movies.

Passionate swim teacher

Heya! My name is Bea I am a swim teacher, surf instructor, scuba diver and RNLI lifeguard. I absolutely love the water and all types of water activities, I am an ex GB reserve for the Olympic team (open water). I love passing down my passion of the water to younger children, especially when they learn a skill and are happy in themselves, that’s when I’m the proudest, it’s such an achievement! It makes me feel so happy when children feel safe and confident in the water. When I am not in the water you will find me walking my dogs, eating pesto pasta and drinking coffee!

Passionate swim teacher

Hi, I’m Gemma! I’m a swim teacher who loves helping children feel confident, safe, and happy. I have a calm, supportive approach, especially helpful for those “I’m not getting in!” moments we all know too well. When I’m not at the pool, you’ll usually find me spending time with my family on our sailing boat or out walking my dog. I’m happiest when I’m outdoors and by the water. My goal is to make lessons fun, relaxed, and full of encouragement, helping every child build confidence at their own pace.

Co-founder & director

Hi, I’m Sophie, co-founder of Bluefins. Growing up with a swim-teacher mum, swimming has always been part of my life. I’ve been teaching for many years and now train new teachers too, bringing my own learning experiences into every lesson. I can’t wait to welcome you to Bluefins!

Passionate swim teacher

Hello! My name is Beth. My first job was in a pool because I love swimming and water activities. I really enjoyed it and I instantly knew I wanted to train as a swimming teacher! My favourite thing about teaching is definitely the variety of pool toys. There are so many different games and activities that can be used to grow water confidence and strengthen swimming ability. My lessons are always progressive and fun through using a range of different activities. All my lessons are inclusive and individual to every child’s skills and abilities. I love to see the growth in confidence grow in all the children each week! During my spare time I enjoy a range of sports and love spending time with my friends and family.
